Comedic side of Alzheimer’s Disease Explored In The Theatrical Production of “Things That Hurt”
Atlanta, GA/E-Release/ -Resurgence Theatre will present the 2017 production of “Things That Hurt”, starring Taurean Blacque (Hill Street Blues) on November 2-5 and November 9-12 at the Academy Theatre.
Performances are as follows: Thursday – Saturday at 8 pm., and Sunday at 3 p.m. This will bring the serio-comedic play, “Things That Hurt” to the forefront of Atlanta’s theatre community and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
“Things That Hurt” centers around the Lewis family, brought together after their patriarch, Dr. Edward Lewis, is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His wife, Mona, drinking heavily and “numbing herself”, is joined by their son Ronald, and daughter, Karen, and an observer to this chaos: Beverly, a Nurse who was hired after the diagnosis. Edward announces that he’s considering assisted suicide to eliminate the eventual suffering.
The family, outraged, convinces Edward to change his mind, and six years later, find themselves bearing the consequences of this decision. Tensions bubble over as a violent Edward is kicked out of the Assisted Living Home and returns to his family home for care.
Using photography and film footage, the story examines how the past, both helps and hurts us. Bursting with irrepressible humor and intelligence, “Things That Hurt” is dense, funny and compassionate.
Cast also includes Janna Koffman, Claudette Alexander-Thomason, Tanya Freeman and Robb Douglas.
