LATE NIGHTS INFORMATION

Would you like to perform?

The Academy Theatre is looking for performers for our "Late Night Saturdays," a series of events that begin at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday nights. Below is information about the series and how to audition.

Almost anything goes: LNS' idea is to offer a 90-minute potpourri of surprises, delights and diverse ideas in entertainment -- with the unexpected as its hallmark. Our programs include diverse theatrical performance, music of every imaginable style (rap, folk, opera, classical, jazz, blues and all stops in between), spoken word, cabaret, dance, stand-up, poetry, improv, belly dance, magic and circus -- and virtually anything else that a mainstream audience -- broadly defined -- might enjoy. (No "adult" material, please.)

Everyone gets paid. Not much, to be sure -- two comps and a small share of the box office proceeds (tickets, by the way, are $8.00) -- but then we don't ask for a large time commitment. Each 90-minute evening consists of three acts, each performing 24-28 minutes (and yes, the time limits are very strict). All we ask is that the acts come in ready to go -- there's no -- repeat, no -- rehearsal, and set up/strike must be able to be accomplished in three minutes or less. We have a mike, a piano, cubes, some masking, four music stands, tables and chairs. We absolutely cannot accommodate acts that need extensive sets or complex light and sound. (If you need sound, all cues must be on one CD, and each must be clearly identified in your script.) What we have available is what you have to work with.

Auditions are by appointment only. Please check our Events Calendar for the dates and times of our auditions. (Check "next month" on the calendar as well.) To arrange an audition please contact Evan Guilford-Blake, the producer, at academylatenights@yahoo.com. Tell us a little about your act and where you've performed. DON'T SIMPLY SEND A LINK TO A WEBSITE., and please do not attach anything to your e-mail. (E-mails with attachments will be deleted unread.)

You don't have to have a lot of experience, but some credentials are helpful. The venue is designed to offer new talent the chance to showcase itself, and established performers to try out new material. The shows are held every other Saturday night and we're booking through the rest of the year.

To audition, you must:
  • have a head shot (individual or group)
  • have a resume
  • bring a boombox if you require a CD for your audition
  • be prepared to audition to show off an excerpt of your act

That means, for example, if you sing or play an instrument your audition should include not only songs but transitional patter, etc. Spoken word artists must do more than: My next poem is; Read the poem; My next poem is... Theatre acts must bring in an excerpt of the finished product. Sorry, scripts alone are not enough and, unless I'm familiar with your work, I will not consider a reading of a script as an audition.
